NEW FULLY UPDATED VERSIONS (March 2025)

Better voice quality, new features

NEW LyrixNotes: You can now export a track from a notation software, including lyrics, as a MIDI file and transport it directly into your DAW (digital audio workstation) - you will instantly hear your melody with words!

Ariana Intro and Artenor Intro: The old free demo versions have been replaced with Introfully functional instruments with five vowels (Ah, Ee, Oo, Ü and Mm) and seven consonants: Start creating vocal music for free!

(In the free version the vocal range is limited to one and a half octaves, but for a very low price you can purchase the Intro Full bundle that unlocks the full vocal range of the Singer and Dolce instruments - almost 3 octaves)

These instruments have now been totally transformed (although they still look the same). The biggest improvement is in the voice quality: Previously a technical trick was used to make the voices sound more coherent across various pitches. A side effect of this was that the voices sounded less natural. And let's face it, a natural human voice does not sound consistence in every pitch to start with! All of the samples have been restored to their original unprocessed form and retuned with higher precision (both vowels and consonants).

Also the Harmonizer page has been polished up. Just select the musical key and get the correct chords by just playing the base note with your left hand. When you play the melody, you will hear your vocal group sing harmonies in 2 - 5 voices. And you don't need to know music theory at all!

Despite of these improvements, these instruments are now available at a much lower campaign prices (Note that the prices may go up any day!)

IMPORTANT NOTICE:
At the moment all the samples and videos on this page are still based on the October 2024 versions - I will upload updated samples shortly. Meanwhile you can learn about the instruments' features - just remember that the sound quality will be better than what you hear now!

The best way for you to get an idea of how the Soultree Audio vocal instruments sound like, is to download the free Ariana Intro and Artenor Intro versions. Just bear in mind that the Intro version has far less features than the Singer and Dolce versions and has a much more limited playable range!

A versatile and high-quality method to compose and arrange vocal music on your computer

Yes, it is 2025 and Artificial Intelligence is taking over ... well, everything. AI music applications enable you to "compose" full songs by just giving a text promp, including the lead singer, the band, the arrangement, everything. This is not what the SoulTree audio instruments are for, though.

They are aimed at musicians, who like to arrange and compose music themselves and want to have full control of each word, each note, how the voice color and intensity changes during the voiced note. Yes, this is possible with one of the new features - MIDI CC (continuous controller) assigned for voice intensity, color, softness and vibrato. Additionally, the vibrato function has five adjustable properties.

While it is never the purpose to replace live singers and musicians with digital simulations, the truth is that most music produced today has been originally composed and arranged with digital instruments - even when the final performance is performed by a live ensemble. When you produce songs or other music involving vocals, shouldn't you have the same ability to make your arrangements in your home studio before you actually take it to your favourite singer!

It took 10 years to do the research for these instruments. In 2020 I submitted my thesis on the digitalisation of the human voice, for the Jyväskylä university of applied science. The thesis received excellent marks. Now this research on phonetics and the human voice has finally given birth an instrument that anyone can use. All you need is the free Kontak player and preferably a keyboard with MIDI connectivity.

When all the vowels and consonants are brought into a user-friendly graphic interface, you can quickly build words and sentences and then "sing" them with your keyboard - or by inputing notes on a MIDI track.

Then there is the power of the Harmonizer unit (Singer and Dolce versions). If you stack up four individual instances of the Ariana / Artenor singers and only assign one part for each, you can even play polyphonic legato - live! Try out basic minor / major chords, dominant 7th, all 7th and even a couple of more jazzy automatic harmonies. Or take full control of each chord by using two or three keys instead of jus the base note!

With the new LyrixNotes application you can transform a track from a notation software (such as Sibelius) directly into a format that can be read into your DAW, and you will hear your melody together with the lyrics that come with it!*

* Apart from the Finnish language, you will have to transform regular text into phonetic text, but the SylBuilder phonetic writing works with basic lower and upper case letters and is easy to learn

A: Pick the first consonant
B: ... And the first vowel,
C: ... the optional second vowel
D:... and an ending consonant

(Note: When you use the Lyrix master, you can have up to 6 consonants per syllable, not just two!)
E: Here you can choose which syllable to use, add and remove, copy and paste syllables
F: This Mode wheel enables you to control when and how the syllables progress
G: This button takes you to the Harmonizer
H: ... and this brings up the detailed voice controls
I: From here you can active the preset syllables

A versatile but Light instrument

Athought to make all of this work you need a vast number of samples, these instruments are amazingly light, just around 50 Megabytes in size. This means you can stack up several vocal tracks without a powerful super computer. This you can do with your favourite digital audio workstation (DAW), when you use the free Kontakt Player VST plugin. However, you can also use the instruments with the standalone Kontakt player (also free to download from Native Instruments).

With the selection of consonants and vowels at your hand you can produce lyrics in several languages, such as English, Italian, Swedish, Finnish, German... All the vowels come with a realistic legato slide: When you play (or write) notes tightly together, you can hear the voice sliding naturally from one pitch to another. This is an essential feature to simulate a real singer.

Another essential thing is to simulate the natural dynamics of the human voice. Most vocal sample libraries will play back the same sound regardless of how hard or how soft you play (in MIDI language this is called note velocity) - only the volume will change. For the SoulTree audio instruments, a research was made to find out which frequencies of the voice are shifted or lowered as the intensity of your voice changes. As a result of this research, these instruments will simulate the dynamics of the human voice so that you can reproduce both the soft and delicate feelings of an emotional ballad and the majesty of a choir singing in full force.

How about making a digital instrument of your own voice?

This is a digitally sampled instrument, and it is not supposed to replace a live singer. However, it is good enough to record convincing backing vocals. It's also more than sufficient to record a solo singer or a vocal group to try out different arrangements, styles and lyrics - before you play your recording to  the singers and replace the sample based vocal track with the real thing!

What is special, is that the template used for these instruments can be pretty easily harnessed to make new instruments with all the same functionality! If you're a singer or know a singer or choir whose voice you would like to be applied for this template, just contact me. I will give you simple instructions for what to record and how (and the necessary backing track to make the job easier).

This is particularly effective for people who compose or arrange for a specific group, because this is a perfect way to make music for them. When you start rehearsing, you already know how your arrangement works with the sound of that specific group!

A suitable version for each purpose

The Dolce versions come with the full Harmonizer module and exactly the same controls for voice color, vibrato, reverb etc. as the Singer version.
